Parents can migrate to Australia if they have a child in Australia who is an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen. Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143)
This visa lets parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen live in Australia permanently.
Requirements
You might be able to get this visa if you:
- are sponsored or
- hold a temporary Contributory Parent visa (subclass 173)
- meet the balance-of-family test
- are prepared to pay higher visa application charges for faster processing.
- Sponsor must give a written undertaking to provide support, accommodation and financial assistance for the applicant and the applicant’s accompanying partner and dependent family members for their first two (2) years of residency in Australia
- This visa requires the sponsor or another person to provide you the assurance of support
- The Assurer of Support must be prepared to provide financial assistance to the applicant and the applicant’s accompanying partner and dependent family members so they do not need to rely on any government forms of support for ten (10) years
- The Assurer of Support also need to repay any recoverable social security payments made to the applicant or their accompanying partner and dependant family members in the first ten (10) years of residency in Australia
Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173)
This visa lets parents live in Australia for up to two years if they are the parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia.
You can apply separately for a permanent Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143) to stay in Australia permanently.
Requirements
You might be able to get this visa if you:
- are sponsored

Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864)
This visa lets older parents live in Australia for up to two years if they are the parents of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia.
You must be in Australia at the time of the application and at the time of the visa grant.
You can apply separately for a permanent Contributory Parent visa (subclass 864) to stay in Australia permanently.

- are prepared to pay much higher visa application charges for faster processing.
- Sponsor must give a written undertaking to provide support, accommodation and financial assistance for the applicant and the applicant’s accompanying partner and dependent family members for their first two (2) years of residency in Australia

Contributory Aged Parent visa (Temporary) visa (subclass 884).
This visa lets older parents live in Australia on a temporary basis for up to two years if their child is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia. You can not extend or renew this visa. However, you can apply for Contributory Aged Parent visa (subclass 864).
Requirements
You must be in Australia at the time of the application and at the time of the grant.

Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (870)
The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (870) visa lets a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years.
Stay
Up to 3 or 5 years
With this visa you
- can visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years per visa
- can apply for further visas to visit up to a maximum period in Australia of 10 years
- cannot work in Australia
You must
- have an approved Parent Sponsor before you can lodge an application for this visa
- generally, lodge your visa application within 6 months of the sponsorship approval.
If the child is in Australia
For children from overseas who are the child or stepchild of an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
Orphan Relative (subclass 837)
For children from overseas whose parents are deceased, permanently incapacitated, or whose whereabouts are unknown, and who have an eligible sponsor.
Dependent Child visa (subclass 445)
For children whose parent holds a temporary partner visa and is in the process of obtaining a permanent partner visa.
If the child is outside Australia
For children from overseas who are the child or stepchild of an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
Orphan Relative (subclass 117)
For children from overseas whose parents are deceased, permanently incapacitated, or whose whereabouts are unknown and who have an eligible sponsor.
For children from overseas who have been or about to be adopted by an Australian citizen or the holder of an Australian permanent visa or an eligible New Zealand citizen. Important: If the child was adopted before the parent became an Australian citizen or the holder of an Australian permanent visa or an eligible New Zealand citizen, they should instead apply for a Child visa (subclass 101)
Aged dependent relatives, remaining relatives and carers of Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents and eligible New Zealand citizens may apply for visas to come to Australia permanently.
Remaining Relative visa (subclass 115)
For people to join their brothers, sisters or parents who are their only near relatives and are usually resident in Australia.
Aged Dependent Relative visa (subclass 114)
A permanent visa for aged persons who rely on a relative in Australia for all, or most, of their living costs.
For people needed to care for an Australian relative or a member of their family unit, who has a medical condition.
New Zealand Citizen Family Relationship (temporary) visa (subclass 461)
For non-New Zealand citizens to travel to and live in Australia with a New Zealand citizen family member who is a special category visa holder.
