Student visa (subclass 500)
This visa allows you to stay in Australia temporarily to study full-time in a recognised education institution.
Requirements
You must have:
- applied for and been accepted to study in a registered full-time course at an educational institution in Australia
- organised appropriate welfare arrangements for the duration of your intended stay in Australia if you are under 18 years of age.
Importantly all student visa applicants need to satisfy the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criteria. In this section we will highlight important information in relation to Genuine Temporary Entrant criteria.
Genuine Temporary Entrants
The genuine temporary entrant (GTE) requirement is an integrity measure to ensure that the student visa programme is used as intended and not as a way for international students to maintain ongoing residency in Australia. In assessing this GTE requirements, the Department of Immigration will consider:
- your circumstances in your home country
- your immigration history
- your potential circumstances in Australia
- the value of the course to your future
- if you are under 18 years old, the intention of your parent, legal guardian or partner
- your previous study
- your ties to your home country or country of residence
- any other relevant matter.
In addition to the Genuine Temporary Entrant criteria, depending upon the country of passport of the applicant and the educational institute they choose to study in Australia, you may also be required to meet the following requirements
- Financial requirements
- English language requirements
- Genuine access to fund requirements
- Health insurance requirement
The Immigration Department may refuse your student visa application without any further request, if you fail to satisfy the requirement. This is why it is very important to prepare a decision ready student visa application.
Student Guardian visa (subclass 590)
This visa allows you to stay in Australia as the guardian of an international student younger than 18 years of age studying in Australia on a student visa.
Requirement
You must:
- be a parent or person who has custody of the student, or a relative who is 21 years or older and has been nominated in writing by a parent or someone who has custody of the student
- not bring family members younger than 6 years of age, except under certain circumstances
- be able to provide accommodation, general welfare and other support to the student unless you are applying for this visa with the support of the government your home country.
Under this visa, you can only bring children under six years old if either:
- there are compelling and compassionate reasons
- the granting the visa would significantly benefit the relationship between the Australian Government and the government of another country. If this is the case, you must be at least 21 and the student must be supported in writing by a parent or person who has custody.
Genuine Temporary Entrants
Importantly all Student Guardian visa applicants need to satisfy the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criteria. In assessing this GTE requirements, the Department of Immigration will consider:
- your circumstances in your home country
- your immigration history
- your potential circumstances in Australia
- your ties to your home country or country of residence
- any other relevant matter.
